Our next event which will take place on the 22nd November. The event is entitled “The Outlook for the Global Markets in 2012″ and will be presented by Ramsey Crookall.

Back in 2002, Donald Rumsfeld said: ‘There are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don’t know we don’t know’.

Although he was US Defence Secretary at the time and his quote related to Iraq, Mr Rumsfeld could well have been talking about the outlook for the World Economy and Global financial markets!

Following on from last year’s ‘Illusion of Recovery’ presentation to the JCC, Stuart Cowan and Peter Robertson from Ramsey Crookall’s Investment team will offer a view on the global economy for 2012. The main assets that will be covered are bonds, equities, gold and other commodities, their prospects for next year and in the context of the greatest ‘unknown’: will Central Banks succeed in their efforts to stimulate recovery and engineer a return to stable economic growth, or will the deflationary forces stalking the Western World lead to a 1930’ style depression?

Stuart Cowan FCSI is a Director of Ramsey Crookall who has spent his career working in stock broking and Investment Management. Peter Robertson FCSI is a Senior Investment Manager at Ramsey Crookall, with twenty years industry experience.

Venue: The Cushag Suite, Palace Hotel, Douglas.
Date & Time: Tuesday 22rdh November – buffet from 6pm, presentation start 6:30pm.
Cost: JCC Members £9, Non-Members £13 – Corporate tables available on request.
CPD Qualifying: The event is CPD qualifying – attendance certificates on request.

Our next event is presented by Mr Tom Richards who has agreed to speak to us on the Eurozone Crisis. Tom is a Senior Investment Analyst & Portfolio Manager with Maitland Investment Services and works in the team responsible for managing approx USD700m of clients’ assets. Tom has lived and worked on the island for the best part of four years and is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment and holds an MSC in International Banking and Finance.

Back when the Eurozone sovereign debt crisis was limited to initial concerns for Ireland and Greece, Spain was seen as a ‘fire-break’ between the region’s periphery and core members. Just a few months later, both Italy and France are being forced to pay higher costs to service their national debt and talk has turned to whether the Eurozone can even survive in its present form.

With many developed countries now staring down the barrel of potential economic disaster, the Isle of Man has historically been in a strong position with uninterrupted economic expansion, low unemployment and healthy national reserves. However, the island is heavily dependent upon access to external trade flows and international goodwill; and the recent re-negotiation of some taxation treaties has left the island having to re-examine spending plans with a rapidly shrinking surplus.

The question is now being asked can the Eurozone muddle through, and what would a second global recession mean for us all? What does the future hold for us here on the Isle of Man?

Venue: The Cushag Suite, Palace Hotel. Douglas
Date & Time: 27th October 2011 – 6.00pm start (updated)

Our next speaker is Chris Eaton, Chief Executive Officer of The ILS Group, to present his overview of the importance of finding and exploiting new market opportunities.

ILS Fiduciaries has arranged for some impressive speakers to join Chris in the line-up including, entrepreneur Courtenay Heading, Isle of Man Government Specialist Advisor John Spellman and Director of the Business Development Agency for the Isle of Man Government Tim Craine.

The presentation will examine the need for the financial services industry to market its services further afield, along with the importance of bringing new business into the Island. It will also discuss the Government country strategy and the framework the Department of Economic Development has put in place to support the strategy.

Nothing is more important for any enterprise than to find and exploit new market opportunities. Even when business is robust, there is always the need to hunt for new turf, to guard against the time when a strong product or service category will become static or declining. Skill in finding new market opportunities is the lifeblood of business worldwide.

We are very fortunate to have secured speakers of such experience. Following the presentation there will be an opportunity for questions and answers, followed by a hot buffet and networking opportunity.

The JCC would like to extend its thanks to ILS Fiduciaries for sponsoring and for providing such informed speakers for this event.

Venue: The Garden Room, Sefton Hotel. Harris Promenade, Douglas, Isle of Man
Date & Time: Thursday 6 October 2011 – 6.00pm start
Food/Drink: Selection of quality : Evening Buffet
Individual Cost: JCC Members £12, Non-members £16

The event will be preceded by a short AGM, about which members will be contacted separately.

You can download a copy of the event leaflet with instructions on how to book a place.

John was born in Oxford and attended Millfield School in Street, Somerset before graduating from Magdalen College Oxford, where he had read Philosophy, Politics and Economics. While at Oxford he made a name for himself in student comedy revue. This was to prove the beginning of his media career as he went on to star with Alan Bennett in a series of sketches on the BBC entitled On The Margin.

He went on to train as a journalist at Darlington College, while he reported for the Liverpool Echo.

John is perhaps better known for his career with the BBC. He joined them in 1970 and worked as a war correspondent in Vietnam, Israel and Northern Ireland becoming BBC Political Correspondent in 1981. During his extensive career he has presented BBC Radio 4 programmes Today and The World at One. His distinguished career has also included appearances on Strictly Come Dancing, The One Show, Grime fighters and more recently a series on British Indian Railways – On Tracks of Empire.
He is married to Mary and has two sons and currently resides in Ealing in London.
