John was born in Oxford and attended Millfield School in Street, Somerset before graduating from Magdalen College Oxford, where he had read Philosophy, Politics and Economics.  While at Oxford he made a name for himself in student comedy revue. This was to prove the beginning of his media career as he went on to star with Alan Bennett in a series of sketches on the BBC entitled On The Margin.

He went on to train as a journalist at Darlington College, while he reported for the Liverpool Echo.

John is perhaps better known for his career with the BBC.  He joined them in 1970 and worked as a war correspondent in Vietnam, Israel and Northern Ireland becoming BBC Political Correspondent in 1981.  During his extensive career he has presented BBC Radio 4 programmes Today and The World at One.  His distinguished career has also included appearances on Strictly Come Dancing, The One Show, Grime fighters and more recently a series on British Indian Railways – On Tracks of Empire.
He is married to Mary and has two sons and currently resides in Ealing in London.

I would like to offer our thanks and appreciation to Barclays Wealth, not just for their sponsorship of this event, but for all the support they have shown JCC IOM since becoming our first Corporate Member in 2009.
