Our next event is presented by Mr Tom Richards who has agreed to speak to us on the Eurozone Crisis. Tom is a Senior Investment Analyst & Portfolio Manager with Maitland Investment Services and works in the team responsible for managing approx USD700m of clients' assets. Tom has lived and worked on the island for the best part of four years and is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment and holds an MSC in International Banking and Finance. Back when the Eurozone sovereign debt crisis was limited to initial concerns for Ireland and Greece, Spain was seen as a 'fire-break' between the region's periphery and core members. The JCC held an investment focused breakfast seminar in association with Capital International earlier this month. 70 members and guests attended the event at the Claremont in Douglas. Chris Bell, a Senior Investment Manager from Capital International gave an extremely interesting and informative presentation about the global economy and its outlook. The JCC were fortunate to once again attract such a high calibre speaker. Chris spoke about the rising importance of different nations and themes not just the West from an Investment and Stockbroking perspective. This included themes such as demographic changes, shift towards urbanisation, food pressures, energy and longer term geopolitical tensions. His thoughts were well received by the attendees and gave for extended discussions of views amongst members and their guests. The JCC held their annual Cheese and Wine tasting event in the Council Chambers of Douglas Town Hall, kindly hosted by the Mayor and Mayoress of Douglas. This year's event, sponsored by KPMG saw a selection of 10 wines and 10 local cheeses located around the room for blind tasting, with attendees trying to guess the wines from a list provided. The new format and venue of the event allowed the committee to open up the evening to a larger audience of members and guests given its popularity in previous years. There was a busy informal atmosphere that lent itself well to allowing members to move around the room and network with other members and guests over a glass of wine. The JCC held their annual Property Outlook event earlier this month at the Palace Hotel. The response to the event was fantastic and once again the JCC was inundated with requests for tickets. In attendance were a number of private developers, principals and investors from property companies, representatives from local advocate practices, and members of some of our major banks and financial institutions, together with interested members of the general public. JCC had arranged for two speakers to address attendees on the outlook for both the local commercial and residential property markets. David Watson, a Chartered Surveyor and Director of Chrystals presented the local commercial market outlook for the next 12-18 months. He suggested that from an occupational office viewpoint, 45% of the 75 000 sf. take up of office space last year was from Owner Occupiers, reflecting confidence of local businesses. Neil ...
